So you now need to birth in the labour ward?
Well, is that actually a problem?
Many things will be changing over the next few weeks in the maternity landscape courtesy of the coronavirus. And these will be global changes.
However, is the labour ward really that bad? Or restrictive?
In short the answer to that is no.
Your birth space can still be very much as you would like it to be.
You will still have access to birthing balls, mats, beanbags, dim lighting and possibly waterbirths and wireless & waterproof monitoring. The large bed which sometimes seems to dominate a labour ward room is actually on wheels, and thus can be moved out of the way. Or at least into a corner of the room. It can be raised or lowered, the head of the bed can be moved also...all so that you can birth as you wish to. Standing, on all fours, on the bed, off the bed, lying, rocking, walking, swaying...whatever you need. You will still have your own bathroom.
You can create the ambience that you wish. So close the curtains or blinds. Darkness makes us feel safe. It also increases our melatonin which aids in the build of our oxytocin...which is of course vital for the labour process. Darkness also allows for privacy and privacy offers freedom from observation, which is so important for a labouring mammal.
Feel comfortable in reminding those around you that you may be using hypnobirthing or mindful birth techniques. Clearly ask them to respect your space and your need for quiet. It is a simple request even should your birth move into the theatre space.
Take an eye mask if you like, I absolutely suggest that an eye mask makes its way into your birth bag. Our minds are easily settled when we reduce visual stimulus - yes...it does also work for horses!
Take a pillow from home with you. That way when you rest your face on it you will just smell the familiar smell of home. This will be incredibly comforting.
If you use a room spray or perfume in your home then bring a spray bottle into the labour ward with you. Again, eyes closed you could be anywhere. And what of candle light? A small electric night light is so easy to have ready in your bag. To focus the mind on a small battery-powered candle while you breathe will mentally transport you to wherever you need to be.
You will have your main birth partner and of course the support and care from your midwifery team. Or obstetric team if needed. You have your space, your breath and your baby, all working with you.
How we perceive things in life can make or break any situation. We are here to live in the here and now, not dwell on the past or worry about the future. Step forward and manipulate the materials that you have to serve you best.
The Labour Ward may become our temporary, new normal. But our births are still our own.
